Lone Star 912

Lone Star Roundup 3-22-03

The weather just didn't want to cooperate.  A chance of rain loomed ahead in the forecast all week prior to the 22nd.  On the 20th, a memo was sent out to all those planning to attend, "Do we go for it or do we postpone?"  The overwhelming response was to go for it.

The cars started rolling in around 9am with Troy Berreth in his 68 coupe.  The weather was damp but looking slightly better.  We agreed that if it was a washout, we'd just do tech stuff in the garage.  We pulled the wheels off the drivers side of Morrie's yellow 67 coupe and agreed that there were enough things there to discuss to keep us busy for hours.  As the group began to arrive, we discussed weak points in the clutch mechanism, techniques for wheel bearing replacement, Spring plate bushing replacement and adjustment.  We also looked at wear points like how to check your ball joints and tie rod ends for wear.  Here's some general pictures of that part of the day.

This time we had door prizes also, another first for the Lone Star 912.  Two gift subscriptions were generously donated by Brian Minson of 9 Magazine, along with sample issues for everyone in attendance.  We also held a drawing for a copy of the 911/912 Restorer's Guide to Authenticity, which was donated by Kevin Weldon.  Finally, sample issues of the inaugural issue of the 912 Registry Newsletter and two prototype Lone Star 912 window Decals were handed out to those lucky enough to have their names drawn at the right time.

By now the weather was starting to cooperate and we headed out to look at some of the other cars and see what we could do to make improvements.

We added rear defroster tubes to Troy's car.

We found that David's '66 was running very rich.  We backed off the mixture and balanced the carburetors.

We then lined the cars up for a brief photo session to prove to the world we were there.

By now, it was around 1:30pm and we were getting pretty hungry.  With everyone present, we headed out for our lunch at a place on Lake Travis called The Oasis, for an meal with a view.

Lake Travis is a man made lake, with Mansfield Dam holding back the water.  As this is close to the Oasis, we headed over to enjoy the view.

On Our Way.....

At the Dam.....

That's where the photos run out, but not the roundup.  From the Oasis we drove down to Oak Hill and participated in their informal car show, making for the only P Car showing, and a respectable one at that.

David has agreed to host the next event, likely in the May timeframe and this time in the Dallas area.  We all look forward to a new venue for the next roundup and seeing our friends again.

As Harry Pellows, who recently passed, would say, "Keep the Faith".  Well Harry, wherever you are, don't worry.  The faith is alive and well in the Lone Star State.
